A handsome and imposing Caucasian carpet from the Moghan region of the Caucasus mountains. The red ground field is overlaid with twenty-seven octagons arranged in rows of three, with each octagon encompassing a single bold Memling gul. These guls were adaptations of a similar design painted by Hans Fleming on carpets covering church altars in his Renaissance period paintings in the 16th century. A minor narrow lightning strike border frames the perimeter around the inner edge, further reinforced by a dominant reciprocal sawtooth border in white and red on the outer perimeter.
