COLLECTIBLE BOOKS AND EPHEMERA ON INDIAN ART (17-18 MAY 2016)

A compendium of over 200 rare books on Indian art, including limited edition monographs, reviews by early critics, artist-signed books and catalogues that will appeal to art connoisseurs and collectors of rare books. Also part of the sale are books on Pakistani artists.

Leading the auction is A Set Of Marg Magazines: Volumes 1 – 64 (Lot 45). Founded by Mulk Raj Anand, Marg, a magazine dedicated to the arts, was first published in October 1946, a year before India's independence. This impressive collection covers issues from January 1947 to June 2013. Many of Marg's early magazines are coveted for path-breaking articles by influential writers of the time, and are no longer available.

Other highlights include Poet of The East And Chugtai (Lot 1), an interpretation by Abdur Rehman Chugtai of philosopher Iqbal's verses, featuring lush illustrations by the artist; George Keyt by Martin Russell (Lot 14); Himalayas - Abode of Light by Nicholas Roerich (Lot 12), his last book published six months before his death in 1947; Lot 9, A portfolio of Abanindranath Tagore's interpretation of Omar Khayyam published in Paris in 1910, among others.
