Flora Annie Steel a highly regarded writer on India, provides a cultural commentary and Edwardian travel guide. Mortimer Menpes had created a series of stunning watercolours during his travels in India, and Steel, who was already a renowned expert on the subject, was contacted to provide text to complement the drawings. Steel's commission exceeded Black's budget; consequently, Menpes consented to contribute to the project's expenses.
