A Cassell's Illustrated History of India, is an exhaustive examination of India's extensive history written by James Grant. This two-volume work explores the history of the subcontinent, particularly the period of British involvement, from primordial times to the late 19th century. Grant meticulously reconstructs the East India Company's origins and expansion, elucidating its acquisitions and conquests that established British dominance in India. The transformative impact of Western civilization on India's economic terrain is also reflected in the narrative, which emphasizes the moral and material advancements in the region, including the introduction of railways, telegraphs, and the cultivation of a variety of crops. The volumes enrich the textual content by providing readers with vivid visual representations of historical events, figures, and architectural marvels, which are enhanced by a plethora of illustrations. This work is a valuable historical resource that provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate and extensive heritage of India during a critical period.
James Grant (1822-1887) was a prolific author, writing some 90 books, including many yellowbacks. Titles included Adventures of an Aide-de-Camp, One of "The Six Hundred," The Scottish Musketeers, and The Scottish Cavalier.
Many of his 56 novels are about important characters and events in Scottish history. In 1853 he founded the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights.
