A rare understated composition carpet, possibly woven by the Taimani Baluch group in present-day Afghanistan. The carpet is woven with natural undyed wool in various shades of ivory and brown. The field is overlaid with twenty hexagonal medallions, each of which is filled with a Memling ‘gul’ ascribed to the famous Flemish painter from the 16th century. Random filler elements are inserted in the negative empty spaces around the ‘gul’. A set of abstract minor borders frame the composition in a somewhat puzzling incomplete formation, indicating a precious nomadic touch.
