Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan stars Rekha and Farooq Shaikh. The film is based on the Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada by Mirza Hadi Ruswa (1905) and follows the tale of a famed Lucknow Courtesan. Rekha was praised by critics for her portrayal of Umrao and won the National Film Award for Best Actress.
