ABSOLUTE TUESDAYS: OLEOGRAPHS (31 OCTOBER 2023)

This Tuesday, for a window of 12 hours, StoryLTD will offer 30 lots in auction featuring a selection of oleographs from The Ravi Varma Press. The press was founded by prominent artist Raja Ravi Varma and his brother C Raja Raja Varma in Bombay in 1894 and was one of the first to undertake mass production of art prints in India.

Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906), credited with being the pioneer of modern art in India, was also one of the first to marry Indian and European styles of art and is remembered in particular for illustrations of Hindu gods and goddesses using human models. He was the first Indian artist to master the use of the oil medium. Oleography is a method of reproducing an oil painting on paper in such a manner that the stone-printing procedure allows exact brushstrokes and patterns to be replicated with multitudes of tones and a diverse colour palette.

The Ravi Varma Press mass-produced an array of images of gods from the Hindu pantheon, including Saraswati, Ganpati, and Vishnu and his avatars such as Rama and Krishna. This selection also includes oleographs representing figures from Hindu mythology such as Arjun, Shakuntala, Ahalya, and Matsyagandha.

With No Reserve to hold you back, take a chance and bid on these lots between 8 am – 8 pm IST.
