About Natura

“My world is filled with the rich colors, flavors and details of stories I hear, literature I read, music I listen to, sounds that fill my days and life experiences that I come in contact with. In my paintings, these coalesce to take a visual form—sometimes they connect and make a continuum of meaning. Sometimes, they become a means for my self-expression. In the painting series “Natura,” I’ve worked with a new style synthesized from a fusion of folk art and imaginative world art. At its base are Mother Nature and her many fascinating representations in Indian folk art. She anchors this series, probably representing my deep concern about her erosion in our race for urbanization and a sense of urgency to get reconnected with her.

I have overlaid this with the Yantra motif. To me, these Yantras are the bridges that connect the earth with a subliminal fantasy world. They lend both solidity with their details and other worldliness to my work. Through this layered lens, I have viewed characters, culture, emotions and instances. They are sometimes poignant, sometimes funny and sometimes even trippy. I chose papers such as Arches and Fabriano and painted with water color to complement the richness I wanted to bring alive. Ethnic colors add fullness. Original gold foil is the finishing touch. I hope you enjoy this series and take back some of the joy and color into your lives!” - Dhimant Vyas

Write ups from people-

“I was introduced to the works of Dhimant by a common friend, and the first thing that struck me was the originality of thought in the presentations. Subsequently of course I had the great pleasure of meeting up with him and being exposed to many more of his art work. The images that he presents in his paintings are unique; images that I had never seen before. Dhimant has very graciously gifted me some of his outstanding works and they adorn my private space with great interest. I believe Dhimant is holding an exhibition of his paintings shortly at the prestigious Jehangir Art Gallery. I wish him all success, not just for the event but for the furtherance of his most unique art.”

“Dhimant is an extremely talented artist whom I got introduced to when he made the caricatures of the Lagaan characters and subsequently did the claymation for the title sequence of Taare Zameen Par. Both times, he blew my mind. I am a big fan of his work and I look forward to his new solo exhibition.”

Shekhar Kapur

“I first met Dhimant through the email invitation that he sent for his solo exhibition. And this evening I was in the midst of those wonderful works. His quiet unassuming persona doesn’t give away the imagination and craftsmanship of the artist in him. His works are vibrant, imaginative, and indigenous, but at the same time modern and contemporary. Nature, the supreme inspiration, is not just his central theme, but also his muse. He manages to say a lot through his work and it is not without wit. I wish him many more exciting paintings that will bring his life experiences to us in a very special way.”
Nandita Das
Film Actress and Director

“I know Dhimant from the making of the film-Taare Zameen Par. While I did some painting for the film and Dhimant did the brilliant and overwhelming clay animation. It created a great impact in the film. Now he is holding a solo exhibition of paintings. Some of the works that I have seen shows an equal talent. I am enjoying the ethnicity in his paintings, reflecting very much the roots in the creative game. I wish him the best for his first solo show.”
