Tasveer is delighted to present Karen Knorr's most recent work from the widely celebrated India Song series. The series series began after her initial visit to India in 2008 and has won her international acclaim. She was nominated for the 2012 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, Europe's most prestigious award for a living photographer and she also won the 2012 Pilar Citoler International Photography Prize for 'Flight to Freedom,' India Song.

The photographs pay homage to the beauty and power of Rajput and Mughal architecture. Within the interiors of palaces, temples and tombs, we encounter a celebratory vision of colour and pattern. Remnants of a past way of life, these sites take on a new, surreal role. They become the unexpected settings for the wild animals of India. Caught in spontaneous movement and often with playful expressions, the animals transform the atmosphere of the sites. The architecture is shot with a large format analogue camera, while the animals are shot separately, in zoos, sanctuaries and cities, later to be inserted using digital imaging - a very slow process is combined with a fast one. The resulting imagery blurs the boundaries between reality and illusion, creating photographs of ambiguity, but also of majesty and joy.

Karen Knorr was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany in 1954. She was raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the 1960s and finished her education at art school in Paris and London. She studied photography and film at the University of Westminster in the mid 1970s and has taught, lectured and exhibited internationally at institutions including The University of Westminster, Goldsmiths College, Harvard University and The Art Institute of Chicago. She is currently Professor of Photography at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, Surrey.
