This engraved map titled India. The Bengal Presidency was published in London circa 1880 as part of Edward H. Nolan’s Illustrated History of the British Empire in India and the East. Conceived as a historical and didactic illustration, the map presents the Bengal Presidency as it had come to be understood after more than a century of British territorial consolidation.

Rather than recording contemporary survey activity, the map synthesises established geographic knowledge into a coherent imperial narrative.
