Rev. Hobart Caunter and Thomas Bacon, British colonial writers, depicted Indian life and culture in The Oriental Annual[s]. Between 1834 and 1840, a series of seven volumes was published annually under the common title The Oriental Annual. These volumes endeavored to introduce India and its people to readers in Britain by incorporating anecdotes, brief sketches, and firsthand travel experiences of the authors.
Following the successes of the 1830s editions of Caunter s periodical, editor James Walker published an 1857 edition consisting of dozens of short stories and essays on Indian and Middle Eastern customs and culture.
