b) Donald A Mackenzie, Indian Myth and Legend, London: Gresham Publishing Company Limited, no date but [ 1913 ], first edition

xlviii + 463 pages + [i]. 8 colour plates by Warwick Goble, 32 black and white plates; original publishers brown lettered olive green cloth with floral decoration to upper board and spine

Early in the 20th century, the author, Donald Alexander Mackenzie (1873–1936), was a Scottish journalist, folklorist, and a prolific writer on anthropology, religion, and mythology. This book is one of his earliest works, a beautifully produced popular introduction to Indian myths, legends, and beliefs (Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, etc.), with passages from the Vedas, the Ramayana, and the Mahabharata. It is illustrated with eight rather endearing, almost pre-Raphaelite coloured illustrations by Warwick Goble as well as numerous fascinating modern photographs.
