A highly coveted and rare carpet from the northernmost area of present-day Uzbekistan, known as the Karakalpak Autonomous Region. The area is sparsely populated and very few carpets in this condition and age have survived. A deep purplish burgundy wine field forms the central panel, which is woven with beautifully variegated ‘abrash’ wool in different shades of deep burgundy. The field is covered with square ‘gul’ motifs, each of which is filled with a star shaped flower and the four sides of each square are lined with ram-horn icons, a symbol of male fertility. A single narrow border containing abstract flowers surrounds the field.
