This is the last historical work of famous Scottish historian William Robertson, pastor of the Presbyterian Church and dean of the University of Edinburgh.

Robertson produced the above work late in life after having read Major Rennell's Memoir on the Map of Hindostan. His final paragraphs concentrate on the fate of India, its people and culture, hoping that "the early and high civilisation of India, and of the wonderful progress of its inhabitant in elegant arts and useful science, may have some influence upon the behaviour of Europeans towards that people".
