View near Bombay
Circa 1850s
Later hand-coloured lithograph on paper
9 x 11.75 in | 22.9 x 29.8 cm
An extremely rare lithograph of View near Bombay by W Walton after an original drawing by Major Robert Pouget printed by Hullamandel and Walton.
Pouget published a book titled Views in India and in the Vicinity of Bombay in circa 1850, which featured 18 plates. As the book did not feature the current lot, View near Bombay can be assumed to be one of Pouget’s many drawings that were uncatalogued and circulated only privately.
The water body and the Sahyadri range in the background of this lithograph suggests that it is likely to be a depiction of the Panvel Creek. The title, View near Bombay, also suggests the same, as other regions with water bodies such as suburban Bombay and the Vasai Creek would have been labelled Salsette Island and Bassein respectively.
