The Relief of Lucknow, and the Triumphant Meeting of Havelock, Outram and Sir Colin Campbell

1862

Mixed method engraving on India proof paper

27.5 x 45 in   |  69.7 x 114.3 cm

The present lot is a mixed method engraving that followed a similar work by Thomas Jones Barker from 1860. Both the painting and engraving depict a scene from the Indian Mutiny in 1857 - a mutiny that began in Meerut and spread rapidly across North India. This print, after Thomas Jones Barker's painting in the National Gallery, London, depicts a smoke-covered Lucknow in the background with the three generals, Colin Campbell, James Outram and Henry Havelock, meeting in the foreground, surrounded by their soldiers.
