INDIA'S INDEPENDENCE DAY "AMRITA BAZAR PATRIKA" FULL NEWSPAPER - 15.8.1947

Tushar Kanti Ghosh ed., Amrita Bazar Patrika, Calcutta: Nirmal Chandra Ghosh, Volume: 79; Issue: 212 (15 August 1947)
23.6 x 17.7 in (60 x 45 cm) (folded newspaper)

The Amrita Bazar Patrika was one of the oldest homegrown newspapers in India. Launched in February 1868 by brothers Sisir Kumar Ghosh and Moti Lal Ghosh, the periodical initially ran as a Bengali weekly in Jessore (now a part of Bangladesh) before transitioning into a bilingual weekly headquartered in Kolkata. In the wake of the Vernacular Press Act of 1878 enacted by the British Empire, which curtailed freedom of regional press and prevented the expression of criticism or dissent towards the empire or its policies, Amrita Bazar Patrika adapted itself to an English-language daily that continued to circulate in the region. The newspaper was widely recognised for its nationalist stance and ardent criticism of British rule in India. The daily continues to be one of the most valuable records of socio-political events and national movements in pre-Independent India.

The present lot is an original print of the newspaper published from Calcutta on India’s day of Independence, 15 August 1947. This edition features news reports covering the transition of power from the British parliament to the Indian Constituent Assembly, as well as reports on celebrations that followed the historic event.
