An early English translation of Sri Lallulji Lal's "Prem Sagar," ("Ocean of Love") a version in Hindi of the 10th chapter of the Bhagavata Purana detailing the history of Krishna, and based on the Braj Bhakha version of the text by Chatur Chuj Misr. The "Prem Sagar," was written between 1804 and 1810, and is considered one of the most important works of Hindi prose, indeed its author is credited with having "created 'high Hindi' as a literary language." It was enormously popular in Northern India, not least because of its flowing dialogue and easy sensuality, and went through many editions. The translator of this edition, Edward Backhouse Eastwick CB (1814-1883) was a British orientalist, diplomat and great linguist.
