Antique Caucasian rugs - which derive their name from their place of origin, the mountainous region of Caucasus - are known for their bold, primary colours and abstract, geometric designs. Produced since the end of the 18th century, Caucasian rugs are primarily created in villages or tribes, rather than as urban mass manufactured items. These rugs are made of materials specific to the their tribal provinces, with each area developing its own style notable among which are Shriven, Dagestan, Kuba and Kazak rugs. The design too evolved with the influence of the occupying Czarist Russians and the changing demographic of the region. Older Caucasion rugs are often composed of durable hand-spun yarns of wool, including the warp, weft and pile. The designs often include natural motifs, but rendered in highly geometric patterns with considerable emphasis on richly coloured hues. Almost every rug is crafted using the symmetry of the Turkish knot, and the sizes are often small (5 x 8 feet), making them suitable for modern, urban living spaces.
