The Nayak Dynasty was founded by Vishwanath Nayak, and the period witnessed an abundance of wealth and prosperity. During this dynasty, beautiful edifices were constructed, and intricately sculpted stone figures of deities adorned palaces and homes of the aristocracy as well as public places. This stone head would have once been placed in the Gopuram (monumental entrance) of an ancient temple. The purpose of heads such as this one was to ward off evil. They were placed inside various parts of the roof or the Gopuram.
The stylisation is simple and the features such as the large, prominent eyes are in line with the dynasty. A pair of fangs protruding from the lips are an indication of the power of the guardian. The light colour, fine condition and simple minimalistic design make this bust an exceptional work of art.
