Being a German he was interned by the British during WWII and on release started the Bulletin in 1944 which he continued to edit for the next ten years. He left India in 1953. Most of the Bulletin contributions were written by him and he encouraged young Indian artists considerably. He also published the first critical piece ever on F N Souza in the Bulletin besides acquiring his works for the gallery.
