The Kama Shastra Society was formed by Sir Richard Francis Burton and his friend Forster Arbuthnot for the printing of various Eastern works, chiefly of an erotic nature.

See Penzer "An Annotated Bibliography of Sir Richard Francis Burton" pages 163 to 166. The work was first published in separate parts in 1883 followed in the same year by a second edition in one volume of which Penzer lists 3 further issues. Though all these are dated 1883, Penzer believes that all but the first reprint were published later. This copy corresponds most closely (though not exactly) to the 1st reprint listed by Penzer.
