The pichhwai illustrates an episode from Indian mythology when Ganesha and his brother Kartikeya were asked by their parents Shiva and Parvati to participate in a race by travelling thrice around the world. This race was organized in order to settle an argument between the two brothers over a fruit given to their parents by the Gods. The winner of the race would get to eat the fruit. While Kartikeya, who was also the commander in chief of the Gods army, took this challenge very seriously and started his journey around the world immediately without wasting any time, Ganesha, on the other hand knew that he is no match to Kartikeya. Ganesha, god of wisdom, learning, arts and removal of obstacles, instead decided to circle around his parents, who meant the world to him. And thus, Ganesha won the race, the divine fruit and the love and blessings of his parents.
The artist has depicted a bejewelled Ganesha riding his vahana (vehicle) the mouse.
