Shatranj Ke Khilari is a 1977 Indian film directed by Satyajit Ray and based on Munshi Premchand's short story of the same name. The film is set in 1856 and shows the life and customs of 19th century India on the eve of the Indian rebellion of 1857. It stars Sanjeev Kumar, Shabana Azmi, Saeed Jaffery and Richard Attenborough among other notable actors.
