Born in New Delhi in 1955, Bartholomew got his first lessons in photography from his father, Richard Bartholomew, an illustrious art critic, photographer, poet, painter and curator. He was only 19 when he recieved the prestigious World Press Photo award for his series on Morphine Addicts in India. In 1984, Bartholomew was awarded the World Press Photo "Picture of the Year" award for his iconic image of the dead, half-buried body of a child victiom of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and was recognized with Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian awards in 2013.

Bartholomew's work has been included in important exhibitions and museum shows including Xishuangbana Photo Festival (2014); Shanghai Biennale, Shanghai (2012); Head On Photo Festival, Sydney (2012); Angkor Photo Festival, Siem Reap (2012); Where Three Dreams Cross, Whitechapel Gallery, London (2010) and Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland (2010); Rubin Museum of Art, New York (2009); Private Spaces, Newark Museum, USA (2007); and Act of Faith, Nooderlicht Photo Festival, Netherlands (2007).
