Description

This seminal publication is a companion volume to the Lalit Kala Akademi publication, South Indian Bronzes by the late Dr C Sivaramamurti. Together these volumes have become the standard works on the subject.

This book, by three leading scholars - Nihar Ranjan Ray, Karl Khandalavala and Sadashiv Gorakshkar - on the art of Eastern India, is the most extensive survey of Eastern Indian Bronzes available, illustrated with 329 monochrome reproductions and 3 colour plates. It not only proposes a revised chronology of the Pala dynasty, based on inscriptional evidence, but also the stylistic development of Eastern Indian metal images.

The comprehensive descriptive notes that accompany all the images in this volume are another imortant feature, which correct several inaccuracies about dates, provenance and attributions found in earlier publications on the subject.
