Kelly was a traveler and illustrator who waswell-versed in Arabic. He had a lasting influence on major Burmese artists whom he had taught, including M.T. Hla (U Tun Hla) (1874-1946), Maung Maung Gyi (1890-1942) and Ba Ohn (c.1877-fl.1924). Kelly travelled from Dedaye and Rangoon in thenorth toMandalay, and further to Katha, Bhamo and Lashio, observing the countryside, society, rural settlements and cities, and illustrating his travelogue with superior watercolours.
